Dane County K9, Inc.

Support

The Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit is not fully funded by public funds (tax dollars). Prior to the founding of Dane County K9, Inc., the K-9 handlers spent thousands of dollars out of their own pocket to purchase and maintain their K-9 partner's. Annually, the K-9 Unit needs financial assistance for advanced training and to purchase updated equipment. Approximately every eighteen months, the K-9 Unit needs to replace one of the K-9's. A new K-9 generally costs between $8,000 and $12,000. If we need to replace a K-9 handler that the same time, the basic training for a new handler can add another $5,000 to $7,000 to this cost.

In addition to replacement of K-9s or handlers there are several other significant costs involved that DCK9, Inc. has funded. DCK9, Inc. has provided equipment and training aides to maintain proficiency. DCK9, Inc. purchased thousands of dollars in software upgrades to document and store training records. Through donations GPS units were acquired which have been critical in rescue operations.

Dane County K9, Inc. has been fortunate to have the support of many businesses, individuals, and foundations. Donations to DCK9, Inc. not only helps us provide for the long term financial needs of the teams but is also an investment back into the communities the teams serve.
