DEPUTY ENGER AND K9 TY
May 2010 – Deputy Enger and K9 Ty completed certification testing with the North American Police Working Dog Association. K9 Ty is trained in tracking and cadaver detection. K9 Ty is the third dog Enger has trained in cadaver detection. Enger’s current partner, K9 Milo, is being forced to retire early because of the on-set of hip dysplasia.

May 2010 – Deputy Biwer and K9 Utrix assisted another agency with a homicide investigation. K9 Utrix was used to search for evidence related to the shooting.

April 2010 – Deputy Lindner and K9 Dani assisted another agency with a homicide investigation. K9 Dani was used to search for evidence related to the shooting.

DEPUTY O’NEIL AND K9 HUNTER

March 2010 – Deputy O’Neil and K9 Hunter assisted another agency with an armed robbery. Another officer spotted the unoccupied suspect vehicle. K9 Hunter tracked the suspect from the vehicle to an apartment complex where all three suspects were taken into custody.

March 2010 – Deputy Biwer used a hand-held GPS unit to locate an ice fisherman who became lost near Upper Mud Lake (McFarland) as darkness and heavy fog settled into the area. The fisherman was able to call 911 on his cell phone which allowed the dispatch center to get coordinates to his location. The GPS units were made possible by the George Bailey Foundation in 2009. In 2008 the George Bailey Foundation funded the purchase of devices used to imprint the odors (narcotics, explosives, cadaver) the dogs are trained to locate.

February 2010 – Deputy Kelly and K9 Rico assisted another deputy who had stopped a vehicle on the Interstate. The vehicle was travelling from Chicago to Minnesota. Numerous indicators of narcotics activity were noted. K9 Rico indicated as to the presence of a controlled substance. More than 200 grams of THC (marijuana were found in the vehicle.

February 2010 – Deputy O’Neil and K9 Hunter completed certification testing throught the North American Police Working Dog Association (NAPWDA). The Sheriff promptly K9 Hunter for service. O’Neil started working with K9 Hunter in November after the passing of K9 Thor.

January 2010 – Deputy Biwer and K9 Utrix were following up on information about possible illegal drug activity. They came into contact with a person, who they later arrested for possession of cocaine and marijuana.

2009 ANOTHER RECORD YEAR

January 2010 – The K9 Unit responded to 950 calls for service directly related to the need for a highly trained police canine in 2009. This represents a 49% increase in calls over the last three years. They completed more than 660 explosives sweeps at the Airport, checked more than 560 packages for explosives, seized more than $46,000 in drug money, took numerous illegal narcotics off the street (marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine), tracked more than 40 suspects, and performed numerous other tasks. The success of the Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit is a direct result of the community support we receive.

December 2009 – Deputy Lindner and K9 Dani were called to check certain portions of the Capitol after it was reported a suspicious peron may have placed a bomb in the building. Nothing was located. A short time later they were called to a nearby business to check a suspicious package. No explosives were detected.

November 2009 – Deputy Lindner and K9 Dani assisted the Secret Service during President Obama’s visit to Madison. K9 Dani conduct numerous sweeps for explosives to ensure the Presidents safety.

October 2009 – Deputy Lindner and K9 Dani responded with the Sheriff’s Office Exposives Ordinance Disposal Unit to check a suspicious package found in a parking ramp. Exposives Technicians rendered the package safe. K9 Dani was used to sweep the parking ramp and vehicles for other suspicious devices.

September 2009 – Deputy Biwer and K9 Utrix assisted during a vehicle pursuit. The offending vehicle had just been involved in an armed robbery of a bank. The pursuit ended when spike strips were successfully deployed. The offender exited the vehicle and while displaying a handgun fled into a wooded area. K9 Utrix was used to track the suspect. K9 Utrix located the offender and he immediately surrendered to police.

August 2009 – Deputy Lindner and K9 Dani responded with members of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit to assist another County with executing a search warrant. Information had been received that there were explosive devices in the residence. K9 Dani was used to sweep for the presence of explosives before officers searched the area.

August 2009 – Deputy O’Neil and K9 Thor responded to a strong armed robbery. The offender had been located and was barricaded in a residence. The offender surrendered once Deputy O’Neil gave warnings about the presence of K9 Thor.

August 2009 – Deputy O’Neil and K9 Thor responded to an armed robbery of a bank. K9 Thor was used to track the offender. K9 Thor tracked across the bank parking lot and then south to a nearby biking trail. K9 Thor then pulled off the track into some heavy brush and alerted on a baseball cap. This was the same cap worn by the offender during the robbery. Deputy O’Neil instructed K9 Thor to track again.

K9 Thor tracked along the biking trail and then tracked off onto a small trail through a wooded area. Part way down the trail, K9 Thor again pulled off the trail into some brush. K9 Thor alerted to additional clothing worn by the offender during the armed robbery. K9 Thor continued tracking into a residential area, where the track abruptly ended at the roadway. The suspect was taken into custody later and it was determined the track ended where the get-away vehicle had been waiting.

August 2009 – Deputy Kelly initiated a traffic stop on the Interstate. K9 Rico alerted to the presence of a controlled substance in the vehicle. The subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms.

June 2009 – Deputy Biwer and K9 Utrix went to an apartment complex to follow-up on previous drug complaints. K9 Utrix alerted to the presence of a controlled substance in one of the apartments. A subsequence investigation resulted in the seizure of a half pound of marijuana.

June 2009 – Deputy O’Neil and K9 Thor responded with other deputies to a residential burglary in progress. The suspect fled on foot prior to deputies arriving. K9 Thor tracked the suspect more than five miles through farm fields, wooded areas, and a creek. Along the track K9 Thor alerted on a backpack, later determined to contain tools the suspect was using to commit the burglary. The suspect was apprehended by deputies on the perimeter. K9 Thor continued the track, succefully linking the suspect back to the residence where the track started.

June 2009 – Deputy Biwer and K9 Utrix assisted another deputy on a traffic stop. K9 Utrix alerted to the presence of a controlled substance in the vehicle. The investigation resulted in an arrest for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

May 2009 – Deputy Kelly and K9 Rico went to a hotel to follow-up on previous drug complaints. K9 Rico alerted to the presence of a controlled substance in one of the rooms. The subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of 1.25 pounds of marijuana and over $7,000.

May 2009 – Deputy Kelly and K9 Rico assisted during a vehicle pursuit. The offending vehicle contained a suspect in several area shootings. The vehicle pursuit stopped after spike strips were successfully deployed. All three occupants from the vehicle bailed out and fled on foot.

The driver was quickly taken into custody by officers as he ran through an apartment complex. The other two occupants fled into an area covered in thick vegetation, allowing only about two feet of visibility. Deputy Kelly gave verbal warnings into the wooded area telling the offenders a police canine was going to be deployed. K9 Rico then tracked into the wooded area, quickly locating one of the offenders. The final offender gave up to one of the police units on the perimeter after hearing the police canine warning.

K9 Rico also located crack cocaine in the vehicle.

March 2009 – Deputy O’Neil and K9 Thor assisted in apprehending two suspects that stole an ATM. The suspects fled in a vehicle which was involved in a short pursuit before stopping and the two suspects ran from the vehicle. Deputy O’Neil and K9 Thor responded to the scene and a perimeter of the area was quickly set up. One suspect was thought to be hiding on a porch. Deputy O’Neil made announcements of his presence with K9 Thor and the suspect gave up.

Deputy O’Neil and K9 Thor then back tracked the suspects paths, locating a wallet and knife the suspects had dropped while fleeing. The tracks led to the areas where each suspect was apprehended, confirming they had the right suspects.

March 2009 – Deputy Biwer and K9 Utrix responded into the Village of Deerfield for a reported Prowler looking into a caller’s window. After getting suspect information, including the direction in which the suspect fled, Deputy Biwer and Utrix initiated a track. After tracking across a field, road, and down sidewalks, the track eventually led to a back deck of a residence. This successful track contributed to the arrest of a suspect that same night.

DEPUTY O’NEIL AND K9 THOR

August 2008 – At approximately 8:15PM, deputies responded to a crash on STH 138 at Starr School Rd. Both occupants from the at-fault vehicle sustained significant injuries, yet fled on foot into a nearby cornfield.

Deputy O’Neil and K9 Thor were paged from home and began tracking the two suspects at 9:15PM, one hour after the crash had occurred. The track lasted one hour and twenty-five minutes covering 1.7 miles. The majority of the track was through cornfields, but also crossed a swamp, plowed field, alfalfa field, heavy brush, and a small wooded area. One of the suspects was located in a small wooded area approximately 2.5 hours after the crash had occurred. The suspect was still bleeding heavily when found and was in need of medical attention. Fire and EMS personnel assisted in the difficult task of extracting this person from this remote location. The suspect was eventually taken by Med-Flight to UW-Hospital.

August 2008 – An armed robbery occurred at an apartment complex on the south side of Madison Deputy Kelly and K9 Indy were training in the area and were called into service by the Madison Police Department. K9 Indy began tracking through a park, crossing a four-lane road, and then along a nearby roadway.

During the track, the suspect committed another robbery at a local business. Deputy Kelly and K9 Indy tracked through the building where the second armed robbery occurred and then back along a roadway. Madison Police perimeter units eventually apprehended the suspect as he was being “pushed” by K9 Indy’s tracking. The track covered approximately 20-city blocks in 80-degree heat.

July 2008 – The Dalai Lama visited Dane County for a week during the month of July. Deputy Scott Lindner and K9 Dani were assigned dignitary detail to providing protective sweeps for explosive materials. The Dalai Lama had a safe and successful visit to Dane County.
